Chapter Four: Fuckin' Batman

There was relaxation, and then there was boredom. Summer sat on the deck chairs in the early afternoon and felt the latter.

"There's something missing here," she said. "I just… can't quite say what it is."

Ted slid his hat back and opened his eyes. Autumn looked up from her book. Brandon snored on his deck chair.

"There's the sun," Summer said. "A lovely summer day. I see this large, rippling body of water laid out before us."

"It is quite a sight," Ted agreed.

Summer sipped from a beer bottle, scratched her chin, and continued, "What could possibly be missing that would make this… I don't know. Not boring?"

Autumn closed her book and suggested, "Music?"

"Hmm," Summer said. "Yes. I suppose music would liven up the atmosphere. I was thinking about something else, though. Maybe something that goes in the lake. Perhaps even on top of the water. A sort of… Oh, a vessel of some kind, perhaps."

"I could throw you in the lake," Ted suggested. "That would liven up the atmosphere."

Summer sighed and grumbled, "I see your plan. You've brought us out here, too far for a call to CPS, so you can finally be rid of me."

"You see?" Autumn said. "I don't know why we're spending a dime on her going to college. She's got it all figured out already."

Brandon sat up and said suddenly, "Since you're both very old, and I don't want to cause you too much cardiac trauma, consider this fair warning. I agree with Summer."

"You kept the receipt for that one, right?" Ted asked his wife, pointing at Brandon. "I think it's defective."

Summer whined and said, "Seriously. Are we going to just sit here and look at the water for the next month?"

Ted sighed, sat back, and said, "Look. I get it. Think of it like this, though. You could be up there scrubbing and fixing the house, which was the original plan. Next year, the boat. Thanks to a little generosity, though, we're off the hook on doing the hard work ourselves. If you want to blame someone for your boredom, go talk to Phil."

"Someone say my name?" Phil's voice boomed out from the steps.

Ted's family all whipped around.

"Shit!" Ted said. "How can you be that big and move that quietly?"

The big man tipped his hat to Autumn and replied, "It's a gift."

Ted stood up and pulled another deck chair over, offering it to Phil.

"You want a beer?" he asked.

Phil nodded. Autumn popped the cooler and handed him a bottle.

"Your girl's not wrong," Phil said, nodding to Summer. "A lake house without a boat sort of sucks the fun out of things."

"Are there rentals?" Ted asked.

"Oh, sure," Phil said. "A couple of them. I think I can do you one better, though, if you all feel like coming by the house for lunch."

"That's very generous, Phil," Autumn said. "We wouldn't want to impose."

Phil waved his hand and said, "Nonsense. When you're on the lake, you're in a community. That means what's mine is yours. Come on by. Carla's already got the grill going, and Dylan's making burgers. It's not a boat, but it might take some of Summer's boredom away."

"I'm in," Summer said.

"Thanks, Mr. Phil," Brandon added.

"Sure," Ted agreed. "But only if Autumn can come, too."

Autumn snorted and said, "I'll put you in the fucking lake…"

"The more lovely ladies, the better," Phil said.

Two hours later, with full stomachs, the two families lounged on Phil's back deck. The view over the lake showed a seemingly endless expanse of clear water. There was a far bank, but the summer haze obscured any view of it across the vast reservoir. Phil stood up from his chair and gave a stretch.

"Before we all go comatose," he said, "I think it's time to let the neighbors in on one of our little secrets."

"There really was a murder?" Summer said.

Crystal giggled.

"If so, that isn't one of our secrets," Phil said with a chuckle.

"This is where you drop the other shoe in exchange for help with the house, isn't it?" Ted asked and sighed.

"Nope. No other shoe. I meant what I said about the fixer-upper."

"I think he means the Batcave," Dylan said.

"I knew you were all too good to be true," Summer whined. "You're actually vampires!"

"I don't suck blood," Crystal said with a wink at Brandon, who blushed and looked away.

Carla gave her a playful slap on the shoulder.

"The Batcave?" Autumn asked.

Phil grinned and said, "Follow me."

Curiosity piqued, the seven of them formed a line behind Phil, who led them back into the house. They wound through the hallway until he stopped at a door, which he opened to reveal a winding staircase. He flicked a switch, illuminating the descent.

"This is where he keeps the bodies," Crystal whispered to Summer.

"Can I wait up here?" she asked. "Someone should be left to tell the tale."

Brandon nudged her in the back, and they began the climb down. The staircase spiraled down, further and further, the chill creeping in with each step. Finally, they emerged into a wide open cavern beneath the house.

"Holy hell," Ted whispered. "You weren't joking."

"The previous owners had a wine cellar down here," Phil explained. "The cavern's natural, but I had a different idea in mind."

Situated far below the home, the cavern was now a realized dock, thanks to Phil's ingenuity. The floor had been smoothed over, and a layer of concrete was put down to create a flat surface. Overhead, bright lights shone down on the area. Suspended on a lift, a jet-black speedboat hovered over the water. On the opposite side, sitting on slips, were four jet skis.

Phil crossed the floor to a small console and pulled on a lever. The sound of metal moving drew everyone's attention toward the far end of the water.

"I love this part," Dylan whispered into Summer's ear.

At the end of the cavern, a metal barrier slid up and away, allowing the outside sunlight to pour in across the water. The two families stood in awed silence until the cycle completed and opened the cavern to the lake. Phil threw another switch, lowering the boat into the water.

"Nana nana nana nana," Phil said.

"Fuckin' Batman," Ted whispered.

Autumn slapped his arm and said, "Adam West would be appalled by your language."

"That's the coolest thing I've ever seen," Summer said.

"So," Phil said, "who's ready to hit the water?"
