A childhood accident left Carl mentally deficient. With the help of his sister, Clara, and nephew, Andrew, he holds down a steady job as a night janitor for Apex Biotech. It's not much of a life, but it's what Carl has.
But when Carl overhears two researchers discussing a "smart drug," he can't stop thinking about it. Using a borrowed keycard, Carl injects himself with a sample, even knowing the potentially deadly problem of "brain melt". The results are—at first—underwhelming. Soon, though, things begin to change. Carl begins to change.
His intelligence begins to climb, then to skyrocket, until he can perceive things no one else can, do things that are seemingly impossible. There's still a complication, however: brain melt. Using his new abilities is too much, leading to intense pain and anguish, as it feels as if his mind is on fire.
Will Carl be able to overcome the problem and put his new intellect to use for the greater good? Or will he succumb to the corruption of power?
