Jake waited in the hall outside the bathroom, pretending to text, but all he was really doing was staring at the screen and watching his own pulse flicker in the reflection. The Riley house was as silent as a grave, the only sounds the clicky-tock of the wall clock and the distant whir of the neighbor’s lawnmower. Mom and Dad were deep in the weekday work grind, probably running the Starbucks drive-thru dry or chasing a millionth spreadsheet, so the place was all theirs. That was supposed to make it easier. It didn’t.
