The Riley house was dead quiet after midnight, the sort of silence that made every sound a potential felony. Jake crept down the carpeted hallway in nothing but a pair of checkered boxers and a wrinkled t-shirt, moving with the cartoonish stealth of someone who’d never actually snuck anywhere in his life. The only light came from Tessa’s bedroom door, cracked open and leaking a dim pink glow onto the hall runner. Jake hesitated just outside, heart banging like a gym shoe in a dryer.
